With the economy slowing and adding fewer jobs, banks are anticipating more consumers could default on credit-card payments and mortgages, hurting profits. "(Canadian banks) are running a little bit tighter in capital than they have in the past," said Adrienne Young, director of corporate credit research at Franklin Templeton Canada. "I don't see them having to go out and raise equity... I think the banks will use other tools in their toolbox before having to go and raise equity," said Maria Gabriella Khoury, analyst at credit-ratings agency Fitch. "They are doing that.. to make sure banks are holding more capital as we potentially head into a downturn," Colangelo said.

REUTERS/Carlos Osorio/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 19 (Reuters) - Pierre Poilievre, Canada's Conservative party leader, called for the federal government to reject Royal Bank of Canada's (RY.TO) C$13.5 billion ($9.84 billion) offer to buy HSBC's (HSBA.L) domestic unit, the Globe and Mail reported on Thursday. "If the biggest bank in Canada simply buys up a growing smaller player, then there's no hope of ever having more competition in Canadian banking," he told the newspaper. Last month, Canada's Competition Bureau said that RBC's takeover of HSBC Canada was unlikely to hurt competition, clearing the way for the country's largest bank to push ahead with its biggest acquisition. Still, the regulator found that the deal would "result in a loss of rivalry between Canada's largest and seventh-largest banks."

But some analysts had expected HSBC to also raise its key performance target of reaching a return on tangible equity of at least 12% from this year onwards, a target the bank stuck to in its earnings report. Meanwhile, HSBC said it still expects to complete the sale of its Russia business in first-half 2023, taking a $300 million loss. So far this year, the shares have risen 20% versus a 7% rise in the FTSE index (.FTSE). HSBC said annual expected credit losses rose to $3.6 billion, more than the $3.2 billion analysts had estimated, due to rising inflation pressuring borrowers and lingering problems in China's property market. Despite the fourth-quarter surge, annual profit fell to $17.5 billion from $18.9 billion for 2021, due to an impairment of $2.4 billion related to the sale of its retail banking operations in France.

The Canadian financial institution said it has entered into an agreement to acquire all of the common shares of HSBC Bank Canada, which will see C$134 billion, or roughly US$99.6 billion, in assets and around 130 branches transfer over to Royal Bank.
Royal Bank of Canada said it would pay US$10.1 billion for HSBC Holdings PLC’s Canadian operations, a move meant to position Canada’s biggest bank to expand during an expected immigration surge. HSBC, a London-based bank with a huge Hong Kong presence, serves more than 780,000 customers through 130 branches in Canada. As part of the deal, it will refer clients who are moving to Canada to RBC, said Dave McKay , RBC’s chief executive.
The transaction is also fraught with regulatory risks, analysts said, though RBC argues that HSBC's Canada business accounts for just 2% of Canadian banking market share. The finance minister has the authority to impose any terms and conditions, the finance department said in a statement. "This regulatory assessment isn't likely to be completed for some time," Calvin Goldman, former commissioner of Canada's competition bureau, told Reuters, referring to the latest deal. QUICK MOVEDespite the expected regulatory risks, RBC was keen to move quickly. RBC is paying 9.4 times HSBC's 2024 adjusted earnings, which KBW analysts said was a steep price, though offset by savings potentials.
